River Authority Announces Events in Honor of Dia de los Muertos

WHAT: The San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) is hosting several events in honor of the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Mexican holiday and is inviting the community to take part in this celebration that pays respect to loved ones that have passed. The events will take place both virtually and in-person to accommodate social distancing recommendations. As part of the festivities, renowned poet, storyteller and performing artist Dr. Carmen Tafolla will narrate the life story of former River Authority Board Chair Sally Buchanan, who passed away in 2016, on Nov. 2 which is All Souls Day. A traditional altar will be created, decorated, and installed at the River Authority’s main office by San Antonio artist, Elizabeth Rodriguez from Oct. 31 until Nov. 18, 2020.

WHEN: Oct. 31, recoded performance by singer Alejandra Guzman at Arbol de la Vida on the Mission Reach San Antonio River Walk segment to premiere on River Authority’s Facebook page at noon.

Nov. 1, live music and catrinas on barges on the Museum Reach segment starting from 1-2 p.m.

Nov. 2, recorded video in honor of the late Sally Buchanan for All Souls Day to premiere on River Authority’s Facebook page at noon.

WHERE: Live mariachi music and catrinas on barges will take place on the Museum Reach segment starting at the turning basin near Historic Pearl and ending at the Museum Reach lock and dam.

Staff have removed two large log jams just downstream of Helton Nature Park, keeping the southern portion of the SASPAMCO Paddling Trail temporarily closed. Staff are working to contact adjacent landowners to support a land-based removal solution.

The SASPAMCO paddling trail is open from River Crossing Park to Helton Nature Park.
*Please Note: Paddling Trail from Helton Nature Park to HWY 97 is still closed due to blockages.
