Welcome back to the Happy Trails Blog Series! We hope you have had a chance to get outside and enjoy some fresh air at the San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) parks and trails this winter! But first, a quick thank you.

We truly appreciate those of you who were able to attend River Authority programs and events! Your support allows us to keep providing free activities throughout the San Antonio River Basin.

For the Nature Lover

If you would like to learn how to fish or just enjoy fishing, come out to Padre Park and join the Fin Addict staff with their amazing volunteers for a Family, Fishing, & Friends Angler Education Clinic. This event is FREE to the public, and NO FISHING LICENSE is needed! The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. Please sign up if you are interested!

As part of our Free Camping Weekend in March, join us at Helton Nature Park on March 8, 2024, for the big screen showing of Brother Bear from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. NO REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Bring your own chairs, sleeping bags, bean bags, etc. Everyone will be on a large grassy lawn, and popcorn will be provided.

Free Camping Weekend at Helton Nature Park

FRIDAY NIGHT HIKES ARE BACK! Join River Authority staff on a nature hike to explore the nocturnal flora and fauna that San Antonio River Authority’s nature-based parks call home. Learn about native plants and wildlife in a fun and exciting way. You never know what you will find, so join us for these wildcard night hikes through these amazing nature parks.

The San Antonio River Authority is bringing you a NEW SERIES called Nature Days. On the second Tuesday of each month, join River Authority Staff for a different nature topic from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Each series, participants will not only be introduced to a new nature topic but they will also be introduced to a different San Antonio River Authority nature-based park.

💩 First up is Nature Days: Tracks and Scat on Tuesday, March 12! Join River Authority staff and explore the grounds of Trueheart Nature Park. Use your investigative skills to find out what animals call the park home and create your own animal track to take home with you. Register today!

For the Artistic One

Join San Antonio River Authority staff for a 7-week Folklorico Class to learn basic Folklorico steps and choreography. At the end of the seven weeks, students will get the chance to perform at Fiesta Flotilla on April 21. All participants are required to attend all seven classes to be prepared for the live performance. Practice skirts will be provided for class time. Register for the Folklorico Class today!

Painting with a Hike will be continuing once a month!

Join us in Kenedy, TX, at Escondido Creek Parkway on March 15 for painting with a hike from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Discover a world of artistic possibilities as you harness your creativity with this distinctive painting technique. Immerse yourself in nature’s beauty and encounter the vibrant native birds who call this park home. Here’s a sneak peek at the painting for March 15!

For the adventurer

Discover the San Antonio River beyond the Downtown River Walk! Find hidden gems of art, nature, and engineering as you complete missions and experience some of San Antonio’s great outdoor spaces. All you need to do is explore the river and its tributaries, and you could win cool prizes! Simply download the Goose Chase app on your phone to log your progress as you complete missions designed to get you outside and learn about what you can find along the San Antonio River.

2024 Race the River Series

When: April 21, 2024, May 11, 2024, September 6, 2024 & October 5, 2024

Race the River is back! This 4-part racing series will give new and pro racers a paddling experience of the Mission Reach, Goliad, and SASPAMCO paddling trails and the first-ever nighttime race on the historic Downtown River Walk. Registration is required. Sign up to compete today!

Save the Date: 2024 Fiesta Flotilla is on Sunday April 21!

Mission Reach Flotilla Fiesta is the official kayaking event of Fiesta! It will take place at Acequia Park on Sunday, April 21, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Like all good parties, there will be good music, delicious food, and a lot of fun includingarts and crafts, a canoe and kayak decorating contest, Folklorico dancers, and a drum circle to start the day. And since we are all about outdoor recreation, take advantage of FREE kayaking and a FREE outdoor fishing clinic. We hope to see you out(doors) at Mission Reach Flotilla Fiesta!

Trail Closure: Museum Reach Trail

Please be advised that the Museum Reach Trail at the Pearl South Bridge will be closed from Thursday, December 19, 2024, through Friday, December 20, 2024, until close of business.

This closure affects the west bank of the river between Newell Street and Myrtle Street due to construction on the trail. Barricades and signage are in place to indicate the closure and provide alternative routes.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this period.

Note: Please exercise caution and follow all posted signage and barricades in the area.

Stem Density Efforts

Please be advised that trails near the Confluence Park and Conception Park area will be temporarily closed due to ongoing Stem Density efforts. We appreciate your cooperation and ask that you remain mindful of workers and closures when in the vicinity. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our natural spaces!

 

SASPAMCO Paddling Trail Temporarily Closed

Staff have removed two large log jams just downstream of Helton Nature Park, keeping the southern portion of the SASPAMCO Paddling Trail temporarily closed. Staff are working to contact adjacent landowners to support a land-based removal solution.

*Please Note: Paddling Trail from Helton Nature Park to HWY 97 is still closed due to blockages.
