Spray paint cans are some of the items we collect at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events

Last Updated on November 7, 2024

Are you a resident of Wilson, Karnes, or Goliad county? Great!

Do you have cleaning products, tires, batteries, and other waste taking up space in your cabinets and garage? Perfect!

Looking for a way to dispose of this hazardous household waste?

Look no further than the San Antonio River Authority’s (River Authority) upcoming fall Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events in our southern basin counties. The River Authority collaborates with local partners each year to hold these six collection events, and their help is instrumental in the success of these events. Joint efforts in the safe disposal of hazardous household materials help ensure the health and well-being of the San Antonio River Watershed. When waste is improperly disposed of (e.g., flushed down toilets or dumped in landfills or riverbanks), it can contaminate the environment and harm the people and wildlife that call the waterways home. These HHW collection events provide a safe, easy, and FREE way to dispose of HHW while encouraging the proper disposal of materials harmful to the environment and public health.

Tires piled high during collection event

In the Spring of 2022, we saw increased participation at the collection events, with 700 residents of Wilson, Karnes, and Goliad counties attending the three events across the watershed. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our creeks and rivers by properly disposing of their waste. With your help, the River Authority collected over 200,000 pounds of unwanted household materials! This means 200,000 fewer pounds of tires in the river, pharmaceuticals flushed into the water supply, and batteries leaching into the soil and water tables.

These events are essential to protecting property, community members, and our precious natural resources. Central to the River Authority’s mission is keeping our local creeks and the San Antonio River clean, which is why we promote the proper disposal of waste. The River Authority hopes these regularly scheduled collections will raise awareness of the negative impact of illegal dumping and improperly disposing of waste and reduce waste runoff entering the San Antonio River Watershed.
